Bear Paw Irish Chain: A Modern Quilt Pattern with Bold Color and Classic Inspiration

A new month calls for a new pattern release from my 6 Colors or Less Collection for 2026! This week’s design combines two classic quilt blocks that have stood the test of time: the Irish Chain and the Bear Paw block. Put the two together and you get the bold and graphic Bear Paw Irish Chain quilt pattern.

This quilt blends traditional inspiration with a fresh, modern feel. Add in bold, stop-you-in-your-tracks color choices, and you end up with a quilt that feels vibrant, playful, and full of personality. Whether you lean toward bright modern fabrics or softer, muted palettes, this design adapts beautifully to almost any fabric pull.

One of my favorite parts about this quilt is that it was designed specifically as a Fat Quarter quilt pattern, making it ideal for shopping your stash or finally cutting into that bundle you’ve been saving for “something special.” If you love efficient fabric usage, strong geometric movement, and modern quilting style, this quilt checks all the boxes.

Read on to learn more about the cover quilt, the quilting details, fabric choices, and the inspiration behind this newest addition to my growing collection of modern quilt patterns.

A Modern Quilt Pattern Inspired by Classic Blocks

I’ve always loved taking traditional quilt blocks and giving them a modern update. There’s something really satisfying about honoring quilting history while still creating something that feels fresh and current.

The Bear Paw block has such strong movement and directionality, while the Irish Chain brings in structure and rhythm. Combining the two creates a quilt with incredible visual balance. The negative space allows the design to breathe while still creating a strong overall layout.

This is one of those modern quilt patterns that feels timeless rather than trendy. It works beautifully in solids, prints, scrappy combinations, or even a limited color palette.

I also intentionally designed this quilt to work well for quilters at many skill levels. If you’re newer to quilting, this is a fantastic skill-building project that helps you practice precision piecing and layout organization. If you’re a more experienced quilter, it gives you room to play creatively with fabric placement, quilting texture, and color value.

Paintbrush Studios: Painter’s Palette Solids

If you’ve been following along over the last few months, you may remember that I’ve been using the same six colors throughout this collection of cover quilts. Originally, I wasn’t sure how people would respond to such bold and playful combinations, but after attending H+H Americas in Chicago, I left feeling incredibly encouraged.

I had all of the quilts from this collection hanging in my booth, and over and over again people told me, “The colors are what caught my eye.”

Honestly, that may be one of the biggest compliments I could receive.

I’ve always gravitated toward bright, high-contrast color palettes and fabrics that feel energetic and unexpected. Sometimes when you work alone in your sewing room day after day, it’s easy to wonder whether your style connects with anyone else.

Quilting can honestly be a pretty isolating hobby sometimes. Most of us spend hours sewing by ourselves, making creative decisions and hoping someone else will love the final quilt as much as we do. Hearing people respond positively in real time reminded me why I love designing quilts in the first place.

So if you stopped by my booth in Chicago and offered a compliment or encouragement, thank you. I truly appreciated every single conversation.

Now back to the fabrics!

For this quilt, I used Paintbrush Studios Painter’s Palette Solids in the following colors:

  • Lemon Ice
  • Artesian
  • Carrot
  • Bubblegum
  • Black
  • White

Even though it has been close to a year since I originally sewed this quilt, I still absolutely love how fun and energetic it feels. The combination of bold solids and graphic shapes creates a quilt that instantly makes me smile.

One thing I particularly love about using solids in modern quilt patterns is how much they emphasize the piecing itself. Your eye immediately notices the shape and movement of the blocks, which really allows the Bear Paw and Irish Chain elements to shine.

Why This Fat Quarter Quilt Pattern Works So Well

When designing this quilt, I specifically wanted it to work well as a fat quarter quilt pattern because fat quarters are one of the most accessible precuts for quilters.

Most quilters already have a stack of fat quarters sitting somewhere in their sewing room waiting for the perfect project. This quilt gives you a great excuse to finally use them.

Using fat quarters also creates a lot of flexibility:

  • You can go completely scrappy.
  • You can use coordinated bundles.
  • You can create ombré effects.
  • You can work with seasonal color palettes.
  • You can even use leftover fabrics from previous projects.

The block construction also allows different fabrics to shine individually while still contributing to the overall quilt design.

Fizz Pantograph and Longarm Quilting Details

For the quilting design, I used the Fizz pantograph. This is not a Modern Textiles original pantograph, but it is such a fun and playful modern quilting design that I knew it would pair perfectly with this quilt top.

I originally received this pantograph through my membership with Longarm League. Their membership includes a new pantograph design each month delivered to my inbox, and I’ve personally been a member since 2020.

If you are interested in starting a quilting business, learning computerized quilting, or expanding your pantograph library, I would absolutely recommend looking into it.

The Fizz pantograph is considered an extended-width design, meaning it is designed at a scale of 120" or wider. Instead of relying on a small repeating motif, the robotic system on my longarm quilting machine travels across the quilt in long continuous paths.

The bubble effect in the quilting comes from two long stitch lines rather than repeating smaller sections over and over. That means:

  • Less backtracking
  • Faster quilting time
  • Reduced thread usage
  • Smoother stitching paths

As someone who offers longarm quilting professionally, I’m always paying attention to efficiency as well as visual impact. This design manages to accomplish both.

The circular movement of the quilting also softens the strong geometric piecing of the quilt top, which creates a really balanced final result.

Why Longarm Quilting Matters for Modern Quilts

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that quilting design can completely transform a quilt top.

With modern quilts especially, the quilting often becomes a major design element rather than just something functional holding the layers together. Choosing the right pantograph or quilting motif can dramatically change the final feel of the quilt.

For geometric quilts like this one, I often look for quilting designs that contrast the piecing:

  • Curves against straight lines
  • Organic movement against rigid structure
  • Dense texture against open negative space

That contrast creates visual interest and helps the quilt feel more dynamic overall.

As someone who provides mail in longarm quilting and binding services, I spend a lot of time helping customers choose quilting designs that enhance their quilt tops rather than overpower them.

Backing and Binding Fabric Choices

Because the quilt top itself is highly structured and geometric, I wanted the backing fabric to continue that same visual energy.

I chose a black Pickle Dish backing fabric that really amplifies the modern geometric vibe of the quilt as a whole. Throughout this collection, I intentionally kept the backing fabrics black and white so the colorful quilt tops remained the star of the show.

I’ve always loved quilts that feel special front and back. There’s something satisfying about turning over a quilt and finding an equally interesting design waiting there.

For the binding, I continued using solid black throughout the collection. For this quilt especially, I think the black binding was absolutely the right choice.

The dark frame gives the quilt a crisp, finished look while keeping your eye focused inward on the quilt design itself. A brighter binding would have competed with the bold palette and pulled attention away from the piecing.
