Welcome to the All-In-One Half Square Triangle Calculator—your new favorite quilting tool! This quilt calculator got a little out of control on me… but in the best possible way.
I know there are quite a few calculators out there that serve this purpose. BUT you’ll quickly notice that this HST calculator brings a little extra pizazz to the table—enough that you might just want to bookmark it and come back to it for every time you make half square triangles.
Originally, I planned to include just the three most common methods for making half square triangles and the required square sizes for each. Simple. Straightforward. Done.
But then my brain had other ideas.
It started with: Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could also enter the quantity of HSTs you need and instantly see the most efficient method? And not just efficient in terms of steps—but also in fabric usage and overall waste?
And once I went there… there was no going back.
So one idea turned into another, and suddenly this calculator became something much bigger than I originally planned—in the best way. It now includes just about everything I personally wish existed in one place as a quilter.
Well… everything except trimming your HSTs for you. If it could do that too, then robots have taken over the planet, and quilting might be the last thing on our mind!
How to Use This HST Calculator
You can use this quilt calculator in its simplest form by entering just one piece of information: your desired finished size for your half square triangles.
From there, the calculator will:
- Tell you exactly what size squares to cut
- Provide the unfinished size for trimming
- Help you stay consistent across your quilt
This is perfect if you’re working from an existing quilt pattern or modifying one and just need quick, reliable cutting measurements without pulling out a calculator (or second-guessing yourself halfway through cutting).

Take It a Step Further: Efficiency + Yardage
If you want to unlock the full power of this HST calculator, you can also enter the total number of half square triangles you need.
Once you do, it will:
- Suggest the most efficient construction method
- Minimize extra units and fabric waste
- Estimate yardage requirements
- Break down how many sets to make
- Provide width-of-fabric cutting guidance
This is especially helpful when planning a quilt from scratch or if you are writing a quilt pattern. Shameless plug: have you seen my quilt pattern offerings?
It also makes it much easier to answer those “do I have enough fabric?” questions without guessing—or worse, running out mid-project.
A Little More About the Math (Without Making It Painful)
If you’ve been quilting for a while, you already know that half square triangles show up everywhere. They’re one of the most versatile building blocks in quilting—and also one of the easiest places to make small math mistakes that turn into big headaches later.
Different HST methods yield different quantities:
- 2-at-a-time
- 4-at-a-time
- 8-at-a-time
Each method affects:
- Fabric usage
- Cutting sizes
- Final accuracy
- Time spent trimming
This calculator takes all of that into account so you don’t have to keep track of it manually.
Instead of bouncing between charts, notes, and mental math, you can make decisions quickly and confidently—all in one place.
A Quick Note on Trimming
These half square triangles are designed with trimming in mind.
That means your cut sizes include a little extra so you can square everything up cleanly. If you’ve ever struggled with slightly wonky points or blocks that don’t quite line up, trimming is usually the fix.
If you’re someone who prefers no-trim methods and consistently nails your accuracy—truly, amazing. Gold star ⭐
But for most of us, trimming is what helps our quilts look polished and professional, especially when working with modern quilt patterns where clean lines really matter.

Designed for Real Quilting Projects
One of the biggest goals with this calculator was to make it actually useful in real-life quilting—not just in theory.
Because let’s be honest:
Most of us aren’t quilting in perfect conditions with unlimited time and perfectly measured fabric.
We’re working with:
- Fabric from our stash
- Slightly off cuts
- Changing plans mid-project
- And sometimes a little bit of “we’ll figure it out as we go” energy
This quilt calculator helps bring a little structure to that creative chaos.
It gives you the information you need to:
- Use what you already have
- Plan more efficiently
- Reduce waste
- Feel more confident in your piecing

Why This Matters for Quilt Patterns
If you’ve worked with quilt patterns that rely heavily on HSTs, you know how quickly things can add up.
A pattern might call for:
- 48 HSTs
- 96 HSTs
- Or even a couple hundred
At that point, choosing the right method isn’t just a preference—it can significantly impact your time and fabric usage.
This is where the calculator really shines.
It allows you to:
- Compare methods quickly
- Adjust quantities easily
- Scale designs up or down
- Experiment with different layouts
For modern quilt patterns, where repetition and precision are key design elements, having consistent, accurate HSTs can make a huge difference in your final quilt.

A Tool for All Skill Levels
Whether you’re brand new to quilting or you’ve been making quilts for years, this HST calculator is designed to meet you where you’re at.
If you’re newer, it helps you:
- Understand how HST math works
- Build confidence in cutting and piecing
- Avoid common mistakes
If you’re more experienced, it helps you:
- Save time
- Streamline planning
- Experiment more freely with designs
It’s one of those tools that stands the test of time and will be here whenever you need it.

Professional Quilting Support (When You Need It)
Let’s shift gears for a second—because finishing a quilt is a whole different part of the process.
If you love piecing but feel less excited about the actual quilting step, you’re definitely not alone. A lot of quilters enjoy designing and assembling their quilt tops but prefer to outsource the finishing.
That’s where I come in.
I offer longarm quilting services with a focus on clean, modern finishes that complement your quilt rather than compete with it. Whether your project is bold and geometric or soft and scrappy, the goal is always the same: enhance what you’ve already created.
I keep the process simple and approachable, especially if you’ve never sent a quilt out before.
Mail-In Quilting Made Simple
If you’re not local, no problem—I offer mail-in longarm quilting services so you can work with me from anywhere.
The process is straightforward:
- Send your quilt top, backing, and batting
- Choose your quilting design (I’m happy to help if you’re unsure)
- I quilt your project (and bind if you'd like!)
- Your finished quilt is shipped back to you
It’s an easy way to get a polished, finished quilt without needing your own longarm setup.

Stay in the Loop with Modern Textiles
If you enjoy tools like this quilt calculator, you’ll probably love what I share in my newsletter too.
It’s where I send:
- New modern quilt patterns and quilting pantographs
- Quilting tips and helpful resources
- Behind-the-scenes looks at current projects
- Updates on new tools and fabrics
It’s a low-key way to stay inspired and keep learning—without feeling overwhelmed.
A Little Extra Inspiration
One unexpected benefit of having a tool like this is that it can actually spark new ideas.
When the math becomes easier, you might find yourself:
- Trying new layouts
- Scaling patterns differently
- Mixing fabrics more boldly
- Designing your own quilts
Sometimes the hardest part of starting a new project isn’t the sewing—it’s figuring out the numbers.
And once that part feels easier, everything else opens up creatively.
