We are excited to announce a new pattern series from Modern Textiles - Pretty Easy Patterns. These patterns are quick projects with great design - basically pretty and easy!! Another great feature - they are each only $3.99. Our first in the Pretty Easy Pattern series is the Picnic Quilt.

The Picnic Quilt, which is 62-1/2" square, is made up of large blocks with a simple, but bold design. The half square triangles are made four at a time. With 16" square blocks making up the rest of the quilt you'll have the quilt sewn up in a flash!

We made the Picnic Quilt sample from some of our favorite Cotton + Steel prints in fun summer-time colors. The prints used in the half square triangles blocks should be non-directional, but as you can see the other two prints used can be any fun print you choose, directional or not! The sky's the limit on the fabric combos on this quilt.

Here's a quick run down on what you need to make your own Picnic Quilt:

Fabric A - Add it up in Lipgloss: 3/4 yard

Fabric B - Party Lights in Blue: 1-1/2 yards

Fabric C - Strawberries in Peach - 1 yard

Fabric D - Balloons in Peach - 1 yard

Fabric E - Add it up in Sea Glass - 3/4 yard

Binding & Tie fabric - Party Lights in Blue - 3/4 yard

Backing - 4 yards (We pieced our backing using scraps and other Cotton + Steel prints)

Batting - Quilter's Dream Deluxe Cotton Twin size batting

I would also highly recommend Best Press for this project to keep the bias edges of your large half square triangles nice and stable. The 18-1/2" square Creative Grids ruler was also really helpful and made cutting go really quickly.

We incorporated simple ties to keep your quilt rolled up on the way to or from your picnic destination! These are made from extra binding strips. Just a few minutes of extra work really add to the functionality of the quilt.

To tie up your Picnic Quilt, fold in thirds, then roll towards the ties.

We are excited to make the Picnic Quilt for ourselves to use this summer, but I can also see it quickly becoming our go-to favorite for a quick gift. Perfect for weddings, graduations, or a special birthday, the Picnic Quilt is a useful size with a classic design that can easily be tailored to the recipient depending on your fabric choices!

You can find the Picnic Quilt pattern in our online shop or stop in the store to see our the pattern and sample in person! We hope you love it as much as we do.

Happy Sewing!

UPDATED 1/10/2019: Second and Third Rendition of the Picnic Quilt

Ahhhhh summer time, how I miss you! If you are totally over the winter wonderland than this post may be just for you! I did include a photo of the Holiday Picnic Quilt Kit though too, for those that wish the holiday season lasted a little longer!

Sew you wanna know how much time it's going to take?

About 3 hours, for the quilt top alone

Tips to avoid the dreaded seam ripper:

-If you select all non-directional fabrics, this quilt is a no brainer. If you want to add little difficulty you can select 2 fabrics to be directional, but you'll have to just cognizant of this when piecing together.

-Once you cut your triangle blocks, ensure that they are trimmed to 16"x16" square, so everything lines up well in the end

-If you don't have a bottle of best press, I'd highly recommend grabbing some from your local quilt shop - it makes pressing seams a breeze!

-I used wonder clips for this entire project! If you don't have a set, I can't recommend them enough!

I strongly dislike having my picture taken, maybe I should carry a quilt top with me everywhere..

Or the Holiday Picnic Quilt Kit - HERE! Currently on sale, until the kits run out!

**Fabrics in the kits are the same as shown in this tutorial.

You can always buy both kits, if you can't decide which one to go with :)
