If you love the look of scrappy quilts but prefer a clean, modern aesthetic, this scrappy snowflake quilt might just be your next favorite project. At first glance, this quilt doesn’t immediately read as “scrappy,” but I promise—it absolutely is. The snowflake blocks, backing, binding, and even the batting were all created using fabric scraps from my sewing studio. The only fabric cut fresh off the bolt was the stunning blue background, and that single intentional choice is what allows the black and white snowflakes to truly shine.

This quilt is a great example of how scrappy quilting can still feel cohesive, polished, and thoughtfully designed. By pairing leftover fabrics with a bold background color, you get all the benefits of using what you already have—without sacrificing visual impact. Whether you’re new to quilting or have years of experience, this snowflake quilt offers both flexibility and timeless appeal.

Why This Scrappy Snowflake Quilt Works So Well

One of the biggest misconceptions about scrappy quilts is that they have to look busy or chaotic. This project proves that wrong. The strong contrast between the background and the snowflake blocks keeps the design grounded, while the printed black and white fabrics adds subtle variety and texture.

A Scrappy Quilt That Doesn’t Look Scrappy

Because the scraps are all from the same fabric, the result feels intentional rather than random. This makes the quilt ideal for:

  • Quilters who want to use scraps without visual clutter
  • Makers who love modern quilting styles
  • Anyone looking for a fresh take on a classic snowflake quilt

The snowflake motif is bold and graphic, which allows the quilt to stand on its own whether it’s displayed as a wall hanging or used daily as a throw.

Snowflake Quilt Pattern Options and Quilt Sizes

This snowflake quilt pattern includes instructions for multiple sizes, making it incredibly versatile and adaptable to different quilting goals.

Wall Hanging and Throw Quilt Sizes Included

The pattern includes:

  • A wall hanging size, perfect for seasonal décor or gift quilting
  • A throw size, ideal for cozy winter nights or statement living room pieces

Because the pattern scales so well, it’s easy to imagine expanding the design even further. One idea is to make four wall-hanging-sized snowflake quilts—each with a different background color—and combine them into a bold, bed-sized quilt. This approach works beautifully if you enjoy batching quilt blocks or experimenting with color variations.

A Beginner Friendly Quilt Pattern

Despite its striking appearance, this is a truly beginner friendly quilt. The construction is straightforward, the piecing is manageable, and the repetition helps build confidence as you go. If you’re newer to quilting, this project is a great way to practice accuracy while still ending up with a quilt that looks advanced and professional.

Pre-Cut Snowflake Quilt Kits: Get Straight to Quilting

I’m excited to share that I’ll also be offering pre-cut quilt kits for this scrappy snowflake quilt pattern. These kits are designed for quilters who want to skip the prep work and get right to the fun part—sewing.

What’s Included in the Snowflake Quilt Kits

Each quilt kit will include:

  • Pre-cut fabric for the snowflake blocks
  • Blue pre-cut background fabric
  • Fabrics identical to the quilt shown here

These kits are perfect if:

  • You’re short on time
  • You don’t have a large fabric stash
  • You want guaranteed color coordination
  • You enjoy quilting but not cutting

With everything pre-cut and ready to go, you can sit down at your machine and start quilting right away—no guesswork required.

Quilt Top Fabrics Used in This Snowflake Quilt

For the quilt top background, I selected a French blue solid from Paintbrush Studios’ Painter’s Palette Solids collection. These fabrics have quickly become a favorite in my studio thanks to their beautiful drape, consistent color, and overall quality.

Why I Love Painter’s Palette Solids

  • Soft but sturdy feel
  • Press beautifully
  • Rich, saturated colors
  • Ideal for modern quilting

You’ll be seeing more of these solids in my 2026 collection, as they’ve earned a permanent spot in my fabric rotation.

Using Scraps for the Snowflake Blocks

The black and white snowflake fabrics came from leftover Not So Black and White wideback fabrics used in previous quilts. This is one of my favorite ways to stretch fabric further—widebacks often leave behind large, usable pieces that are perfect for bold shapes and fabric cuts.

I also used these same leftovers for the binding. Since the pieces were nearly 72 inches long, I was able to create binding with fewer seams, which saves time and results in a cleaner finish.

Backing Fabric and Quilt Seam Matching Tips

The backing fabric for this quilt is the black and white Pickle Dish wideback, which you may recognize from other recent projects in my shop. Bold quilt backs are one of my favorite ways to add personality and make a quilt feel special from every angle.

How I Match Seams on Patterned Quilt Backings

Seam matching can feel intimidating, especially with high-contrast fabrics, but here’s the method that has worked best for me:

  1. Iron one backing piece where you want the seam to fall
  2. Lay both fabric pieces right sides up
  3. Carefully align the pattern
  4. Secure the layers with a small amount of Washable liquid Elmer’s glue
  5. Flip the fabrics right sides together, pin, and sew along the ironed line

This technique has dramatically improved my seam matching and makes bold quilt backs feel much more approachable.
