I’m so excited to share my Alt Current quilt using Fat Quarter Shop’s Ruby Star Subscription Bundle! My husband’s coworker recently welcomed a new addition to their family, and I knew that a scrappy background quilt pattern with a fun contemporary quilt design would be the perfect option for a crib-size quilt. I love how using a few fat quarters for the background can create such a fun, scrappy-looking quilt. Ruby Star Society’s Bird is the Word Collection
After the second winter arrived in Minnesota, I was excited to dive into these cheerful, bright fabrics! The collection, called Bird is the Word, was designed by Kim Kight of Ruby Star Society. With the Ruby Star Society Subscription Bundle from Fat Quarter Shop, I received twelve fat quarters from the collection, along with a spool of Cotton + Steel thread and a fat-quarter-friendly pattern (I’ve saved that for another time). As soon as I saw the fabrics, I instantly thought of the Alt Current quilt and got to work cutting! This quilt comes together quickly—it's a great quick quilting project, taking only an afternoon to complete the quilt top for a crib size.
Quilt Binding: A Modern Touch
Since the quilt is quite busy with prints, I decided to stick with a teal binding that reads almost solid. The print is Pixel from Ruby Star Society by Rashida Coleman Hale. It makes the teal prints from Bird is the Word pop and adds a fun, modern touch to the binding, which is sometimes overlooked in the overall quilt design.

Fun and Functional Quilt Backing
To keep with the cheerful theme of this quilt, I used fabric from the Favorite Flowers collection by Ruby Star Society. It’s a wideback (win!), so no piecing was required for this quilt! I love how using a large print on the backing allows for extra fun and showcases the bold, contemporary designs. If I wasn’t ready for spring to arrive, I sure am now that I have all the fun colors and florals in this quilt to enjoy.

Longarm Quilting with Custom Quilt Pantographs
Sometimes, a busy quilt calls for a fun quilting design. For this project, I chose to use my Hibiscus Peel Pantograph, which is a beautiful original quilt pantograph design. I thought it would be a perfect addition to the already flower-powered quilt top and back. I stitched it out in Pink Rose thread, which is a super soft pink that almost reads like an off-white. Love the quilting design? It's one of mine, available in the shop. If you’re looking for custom quilt pantographs or need longarm quilting services, I offer personalized quilting options to make your quilt truly shine.
