Modern Quilting with the Hibiscus Peel Pantograph

The Hibiscus Peel pantograph design was inspired by a Nordic mural I saw on a walk in downtown Fargo. I condensed the original design and adjusted some of the peel effects to create an easier, nesting pattern that doesn’t require points to touch. As quilters know, when a design requires points to match between rows, it adds a new level of difficulty—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does take more time and care on the quilting machine.

For this quilt, I chose a medium density quilting pattern, which is my go-to for many projects. However, the density can vary depending on the overall quilt design, as it's often subjective and based on the effect you're looking to achieve.

Quilting with Ruby Star Society Bundle Fat Quarters

For this quilt, I used a beautiful fat quarter bundle from Ruby Star Society, purchased at Stitch Supply Co. in Altoona, Wisconsin. To pair with it, I incorporated some scraps of gingham wideback fabric (yes, I know—breaking the rules, but sometimes creativity calls for it!). The gingham creates a busy yet playful background that perfectly complements the fun summer vibe of the quilt. With florals, cocktails, and fireflies featured in the fat quarters, it’s absolutely perfect for the warmer months!

Bold Binding for a Modern Touch

To finish off this quilt, I used navy speckled fabric for the binding, which ties in beautifully with the navy fat quarters used throughout the quilt. The bold frame provides a striking contrast, helping the quilting design pop while also defining the quilt’s finished edge.

Backing: The Perfect Complement

For the quilt’s backing, I was lucky enough to score 5 yards of shooting star fabric from a friend who was offloading her fabric stash. The fabric features yellow, pink, and red tones that tie in perfectly with the variety of fat quarters on the top of the quilt. This is a quilt I can imagine enjoying outside on the deck, watching the stars in the evening—such a perfect pairing with the Hibiscus Peel pantograph!
