With the Northern Night Hike quilt pattern, half rectangle triangles can be a breeze, I promise! When I really got into the groove of making these samples, I could cut the fabric the night before on and in one sitting take care making all the quilt blocks and assemble the quilt top. I’m so excited to FINALLY share with you this lovely pattern that reminds me of my home state, Minnesota. Read on to learn more about the Northern Night Hike quilt pattern.

Inspiration

I had this quilt pattern in my brain for over a year now, it’s wild it took so long to come to fruition. Good things come to those that wait and then wait some more! I set out with the intention of making this quilt pattern Fat Quarter friendly allowing for all the tones of fabric to shine through and give the trees that extra dimension. I really love the look of half rectangle triangles and the harsh angles you can achieve with this block.

Moda Bella Solids

As you know buying fabric online is no joke and it’s always a concern that the fabrics you selected are going to look great together in person. Fat Quarter Shop took the guessing out of the greens in my quilt top. They have a pre-selected fat quarter bundle in all greens from the Bella Solids line from Moda. Check the Lucky Green bundle here. For the background I used Admiral Blue and the stars I went with a beautiful Saffron.

Binding

I really wanted the binding of this quilt to blend with the rest of the backing. Something about it was calling me to not let it steal the show. I had some left over yardage of the wonderful Admiral Blue background fabric and decided to use that on the binding. I think it was a lovely departure from my typical using the backing fabric as binding and love how it turned out.

Backing

Well my trusty dove grey speckled wide back made its appearance again! It’s such a lovely color and so versatile that I decided to use it for the backing. Just you wait, there is change in the air -I may have grabbed a few more wide backs to mix in to my routine! More to come soon :)

Quilting

So a while back I saw Red Willow Quilts Evergreen panto, and loved it at first sight. When I was pulling the top together for the cover quilt, I knew it was the perfect panto to use and really lean into the forest feel. The woods and brush can get pretty thick in northern Minnesota, so having trees on trees was the perfect decision.
