It’s been a while since I’ve made a Northern Night Hike Quilt, and with so many beautiful scraps in my stash, it felt like the perfect winter scrap quilt project. With several new holiday quilt designs underway, a wintery Northern Night Hike quilt fit the mood perfectly.
Turn on your favorite winter playlist (or the Hallmark Channel!) and follow along as I share how I created this cozy quilted holiday wall hanging using one of my favorite modern quilt patterns.

Winter Blues, Whites & Greys
Large scraps in the stash for the win! There’s nothing better than having the perfect pieces on hand for the quilt you’ve been envisioning. This winter, I’m leaning into blues, whites, greys, and blacks—colors that feel seasonal and cozy without feeling overly Christmas-specific. Perfect for décor that can stay up into January and beyond.
Some of these fabrics were leftover cuts from a Robert Kaufman linen bundle, which added lovely texture. The main background is a speckled wideback in off-white with gold metallic accents. This quilt is scrappy from top to bottom—including the batting—and it feels so satisfying to see those scrap piles shrink, even just a little.

Treelight Pantograph Quilting
For the quilting, I wanted something wintery and playful but not too Christmas-y—something that complements a winter quilt pattern beautifully. I also wanted a simple, smooth stitch-out since I’ve been longarming so many client quilts lately and needed something headache-free for my own project.
My friend Shelly used the Treelight pantograph on a client quilt, and it felt perfect for this crib-sized quilt turned holiday wall hanging.

Black and White Pickledish Wideback Fabric
To keep the black, white, grey, and blue palette consistent, I pieced leftover backing scraps using a striking black-and-white pickle-dish print. I pattern-matched the pieces, and the more I do it, the easier it gets.
Do I still love using a wideback for convenience? Absolutely. But when you’re committed to making a true scrap quilt, you make what you have work beautifully.
