Looking for modern quilt patterns that pop? This geometric Octopeel pantograph is a bold, graphic design that really makes the Topaz quilt sing. It’s my first time using such a strong background fabric, and honestly—I’m so glad I went for it. The result? A southwest-inspired modern quilt that’s full of life, texture, and movement.

Read on to learn more about the Octopeel pantograph, the making of the Topaz quilt, and how to hire longarm quilting services for your own projects!

Quilting with the Octopeel Pantograph

Octopeel came to life thanks to a quiet afternoon and some spontaneous play in my design software (hello, Pro-Stitcher Designer!). I started out with a classic diamond peel and began to wonder—what happens when I invert those outer points and lean into a more cross or clover shape? The result: Octopeel—named for the 8-point motif that repeats across the design.

This pantograph design is perfect for longarm quilters with intermediate experience. It’s clean, striking, and has very little back-stitching, making it ideal for those who want a seamless, professional finish. Plus, since it doesn’t require offsetting.

Fabric Choices: Moda Bella Solids

Matching fabric online is hard, especially when you can’t touch or compare colors in person. My go-to tip? Use Bella Solids Complementary Fabrics. Moda often pairs them with their collections, especially Ruby Star Society, so you know the solids will coordinate beautifully—even if you don’t use the original prints.

For the Topaz quilt, I used complementary solids from the Vessel collection:

This combo gave the quilt a warm, grounded feel while still letting the colors pop—exactly what I wanted for this bold modern quilt pattern.

Bold Binding for That Extra Pop

I had just enough Mango left for the binding—and I’m so glad I used it! Since the quilt’s backing is a rich navy Fireside fabric, I wanted something that would stand out on both sides. Mango gave it just the right amount of contrast without clashing.

A strong binding choice can take your quilt pattern designs to the next level, and this one really shines!

Cozy, Durable Backing

For extra comfort (and a bit of practicality), I backed the Topaz quilt with a 60” Fireside fabric in Nautical Blue by Moda. This material has a lower pile than traditional cuddle fabrics but still offers that irresistible softness. With kids, pets, and general life, this darker color hides wear while still feeling oh-so-inviting.
