Have you ever spotted a quilt kit and just knew you needed it in your life? That was me with this Starry Nebulous quilt! I grabbed this beauty of a kit from Wyldwood Creative—Tawnee and the team pull together super rad and bold kits for the modern quilter.

While piecing this one together, I kept thinking up quilt designs that would pair well—and the Oval Peel pantograph was born! Read on to learn more about this fun pantograph design, plus details on the quilt pattern and how you can get your top quilted with professional longarm quilting services.

Quilting with the Oval Peel Pantograph

As I was piecing the quilt top, it gave me major mid-century modern vibes. I wanted a quilting pattern that felt both classic and simple—something that would jive with the design without overpowering it.

I’ve always loved a good orange peel quilt pattern, and while designing, I began elongating the shape this way and that. The result? A minimal twist on a timeless look. I kept it intentionally beginner-friendly, especially for new longarm quilters, by designing it so the points don’t line up—making set-up and advancement easier. There’s also minimal backtracking, so it stitches out fast!

Starry by Ruby Star Society

There’s a reason the quilting community rallied to make Starry a basic for Ruby Star Society. Alexia Marcelle Abegg totally nailed it with this design—the stars have an organic, playful feel, and the saturated color palette makes it pop. And bonus: I didn’t even curate the fabric myself. I snagged the pre-pulled quilt kit from Wyldwood Creative (based in Renton, WA). Their kits are awesome for anyone who loves modern quilt patterns without the hassle of choosing coordinating fabrics.

Nebulous Quilt by Toad & Sew

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been making a lot of Toad & Sew patterns lately. When I’m not sewing my own quilt designs, Taylor’s patterns are my go-to. I love her bold, unapologetic style—it’s super inspiring. If you’re into modern quilts, definitely check out her work. She even launched a Mystery Quilt Club that pairs a modern quilt pattern with a book club. If I had the time, I’d be all in.

A Bold Minky Backing Surprise

So… I may have gone a little bananas during Joann’s going-out-of-business sale and stocked up on minky. 😅 While it wasn’t the deal of the century, any discount on minky is a win. I used a deep teal shade for the backing of this quilt to tie in with the darker blue tones in the top. And if you’re sending your quilt to me for longarm quilting, you can now choose from a small selection of wide 90” minky backings I carry in-house.
