Summer Quilt for Modern Quilters

I’ve been holding onto these vibrant, summery fat quarters since the spring when I picked them up at Stitch Supply Co. during a quilt retreat. I love the bright, bold colors and playful prints. I knew I wanted to create a fresh Quilting 101 quilt to showcase the fabrics in full.

If you’re a beginner quilter or know someone just getting into the hobby, this pattern is perfect for learning the ins and outs of quilting—including terminology and techniques. It's one of my favorite quilt pattern designs for beginners, and a great introduction to quilting for modern quilts.

Balloon Animal Quilting & Pantograph Designs

When I saw Melissa from Sew Shabby Quilting had created this adorable balloon animal pantograph design, I knew it'd be the perfect fit. Add in some hot pink neon thread, and this quilt screams summer fun!

If you’re ready to finish your quilt top and want it professionally done, I offer longarm quilting services for hire. My turnaround time is typically two weeks or less—so you can get your quilts back faster and start enjoying them sooner!

Whether you're looking for quilting services or searching for playful pantograph designs for longarm quilters, I'm here to help.

Eye Candy by Ruby Star Society

The royal blue sugar cube print was the first one I fell in love with—I just can’t resist a true blue cotton. From there, the rest of the fat quarters from the Ruby Star Society line kept “jumping” into my cart: boba tea, push-pops, sugar cubes, candies—you name it.

These fabrics have the best color palette around. Even though they’re not usually what I decorate my home with, they were perfect for a cheerful summer throw. It’s a beautiful way to dive into modern quilts with bold personality.

Binding: Scrappy & Colorful

With this pattern, there’s just enough off-cuts from the fat quarters to create a scrappy quilt binding. I love finishing quilts this way—it ties everything together with the beautiful fabrics.

Do you use scraps within the same quilt, or do you save them for a full-blown scrappy project down the road? Either way, it’s all part of what makes quilting for a fun experience.

Scrappy Quilt Backing with Modern Style

I pieced together all the extra scraps from the rectangle patch blocks and half square triangles to make a vertical column on the back of the quilt. Then I added 2 yards of Cobalt Bella Solid to finish it off.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a scrappy quilt backing, but with limited fabric on hand, this solution was a no-brainer—and so satisfying to create.
