Scandi Stocking: 4 Unique Patchwork Designs + the Simple Wholecloth Style

I’m so excited to share the full set of Scandi Stockings—including the simple wholecloth version that’s also included in the pattern instructions (bonus!). This cuffed Christmas Stocking Tutorial is a quick and satisfying holiday sewing pattern that uses just a bit of batting and your favorite fabrics.

Whether your holiday decor leans modern, cozy, or traditional, you can easily customize these quilted stockings to match your style. I love that you can switch things up each year by choosing new fabrics while keeping the same timeless design.

My kids adore picking out their patchwork quilted stocking each year—it’s become such a fun family tradition that brings festive cheer early in December! If you prefer to change your decor often, the pattern also includes instructions for a lined wholecloth version, making it super easy to sew new stockings whenever the mood strikes.

Patchwork Style – 4 Versions

This pattern was originally designed by our previous owner, Roxanne. Here’s what she shared about her inspiration:

“As I sorted through my Pinterest boards of holiday decor, I noticed that the stockings that really drew me in were knitted—most with a Scandinavian sweater motif. I love that classic Christmas look, but knitted stockings weren’t what I had in mind! So I thought, couldn’t we piece stockings in the same style and capture that same cozy feeling? I used some classic sweater design elements and translated them into quilted form. Here’s what I came up with!”

The result? Four charming patchwork Christmas stocking patterns that blend timeless Scandinavian style with modern quilting techniques. Each patchwork quilted stocking is fully lined, features a cuff and hanging loop, and is perfectly sized to hold Santa’s goodies without breaking your stocking stuffer budget.

The classic quilted design transitions beautifully with your holiday decor from year to year. The samples here are made with Bella Solids from Moda, but these would look stunning in festive prints, too. That’s the best part of a Christmas sewing project—you can make it your own!

Straight Stitch for the Cuff

For all five designs, I like to add ½" straight vertical stitches to the cuff. It gives the look of ribbing on a knitted stocking. You can also add embroidery, paper-pieced name blocks, or other embellishments for a personalized touch.

The customization options for this class quilted stocking DIY project are endless—you can tailor each one to your holiday color palette and decor style.

Wholecloth Version

For my wholecloth stocking, I used the adorable Cozy Wonderland Fabric from my friends at Stitch Supply Co.—one of my favorite shops! They offer fast shipping and even include a free project bag with fabric orders over $50 (yes, please!).

For the lining, I chose Merry Pawmas fabric featuring festive pups and presents on a white background. The cuff fabric is Cotton + Steel Basics in Forest, a rich green that pairs beautifully with the burgundy tones of Cozy Wonderland.

Quilting on the Stocking

One of the joys of having a longarm machine is getting to play with quilting designs on both small and large projects. For this quilted stocking, I used a classic Orange Peel pantograph to create gorgeous texture on the body of the stocking. I quilted the exterior and batting before cutting out the stocking template, then followed the pattern directions with a few tweaks (which I show in the video linked above).

If you’re a quilter, this Christmas sewing project is a perfect way to experiment with new quilting motifs or use up your fabric scraps.
