Ampersand Horizon Quilt

Ampersand Horizon Quilt

Check out this Ampersand Designs Horizon Quilt Pattern ! It’s a strip quilt with simple style and a modern vibe. When the skies are crystal blue and have those thin, long clouds that look like brush strokes - that's the inspiration for the Horizon Quilt Pattern. I love the spin of bold colors and abstract design of the fabrics in quilting in this Horizon Quilt. Read more about the Ampersand Designs styled quilt.

Paint Brush Studio Painter’s Palette

I’m always testing the waters on new solids, there’s nothing wrong with my Bella Solids – but I know trying to color match patterned fabrics from different fabric lines is a difficult task. I saw the backing fabric for this quilt and new it was going to be what determined the Horizon Quilt top pattern colors. Which meant I needed to check out PBS Painter’s Palette solids. They have a wonderful hand and smaller selection – so selecting the right color isn’t a headache! I ended up using Carrot for the Orange and Sky for the blue. This is out of my color realm, but it felt right and boy am I happy with the final top! For the accent pieces I used the complimentary yellow of the Abstract Collage line by Ampersand Designs. You can find it here (120-209202).

Binding

I wanted the binding for this quilt to blend into the background fabrics of the orange and blue. I knew using one or the other would create a high contrast issue on the secondary background color. So I ended starting my binding on one of the blue/orange lines and matched the binding so it lined up perfectly. I then made my way around the quilt with the binding and found my next joint at the second line. It was fairly easy using a quarter inch seam joining method to switch over to the orange color and continue on my way.

Backing

Like I said earlier I came across this black background fabric from Ampersand Designs Abstract Collage line and let it direct the entire direction of this quilt. It is so fun and right up my alley I couldn’t pass it up. What do you think? You can grab the fabric here at Cloth Cult on Etsy where I got mine.

Quilting

For this Horizon Quilt, I really wanted to have a flashy but abstract sytyle of quilting. I went with a very dense version of Dastardly Line’s Simpler Contours and I LOVE all the texture it gives off. I used a sky thread to match the blue fabric and don’t think I would change it for the world.
