Splat Panto: Strip Quilt – A Free Pattern!

This blog post may contain affiliate links. I may receive a small kickback from the seller for recommending products here, but this comes at no extra cost to you.

You may have seen this adorable quilt in one of my free tutorials over on YouTube—but now that the final quilting and binding are done, it’s officially time for its permanent home here on the blog! 🥳

I love, love, love making this quilt. It’s fast, beginner-friendly, and shows off your favorite prints beautifully. When it came time to choose a quilting design, I wanted something playful and fresh—so I created the Splat Pantograph, which looks just like it sounds: a bold splat, like something thrown at a wall and spreading from the center out. It's modern, organic, and just plain fun.

Rashida Coleman-Hale Fabrics

A few years ago, Rashida Coleman-Hale of Ruby Star Society did a stash sale of her older quilting cottons—including some OG prints from her Cotton + Steel days. I couldn’t help myself and snagged a half-yard bundle, and all the fabrics in this quilt came from that glorious haul. I still have a few half-yards left, but I was so happy to finally use these in a project that lets the prints shine.

The larger strip cuts in this pattern are perfect for showing off bold, artsy prints. I love seeing the full design in all its glory without chopping it into tiny pieces!

The Splat Pantograph

Okay, I know the name might make you think of slime (hello, Nickelodeon vibes!)—but hear me out: the Splat Panto is way more versatile than you’d think.

This longarm quilting design works beautifully on modern quilt patterns, especially those with bold blocks, organic shapes, or playful fabric pulls. I can totally see it on beach quilts, improv quilts, or even minimal quilts (scaled wayyy down) where you want the quilting to add movement without taking over.

It’s a great option if you’re looking for something that’s a little unexpected but still works well in a variety of quilt designs.

Backing Fabric & Scrap Stash Wins

Since the quilt top was already so fun and funky, I wanted the backing to be neutral without being boring. Enter: a tan gingham pieced together from leftover cuts from past quilts. Yes—this backing is made entirely from scrap stash, and it feels so satisfying to use up those extras!

2025 has officially become my “use what you have” year. I’ve been making a real effort to sew from my stash and make intentional choices about fabric buying. Don’t get me wrong—I’ll still snag a yard or two here and there (who can resist?)—but from now on, I’m only buying fabric with a specific project in mind.

Because let’s be real: there’s so much beautiful fabric out there. As much as I wish I could hoard it all, it’s just not realistic. Or necessary.
