Scrappy Modern Handcraft Snowflake Quilt

Scrappy Modern Handcraft Snowflake Quilt

I jumped on the bandwagon this fall and joined the Snowalong that is hosted by Modern Handcraft. It’s been a blast and I actually finished my scrappy snowflake quilt early! Here is the completed project. I hope you find it fun to learn about and maybe I’ll see your work on IG. Use the #SnowAlong to see what all the fuss is about!

Scrappy Fabrics

The fun thing about this pattern is there are 3, yes THREE, different versions included in one pattern. You have the simple two tone color scheme, one background fabric and one snowflake fabric, a four-tone background fabric and the scrappy version which you can use all scraps or a bunch of fat quarters. I had quite a few holiday fat quarters laying around and decided this was the perfect project to use them up on. For the life of me I can’t recall where any of the fabrics are from, I believe a bunch of them are from Dear Stella.

Binding

Since I used a different backing on this quilt, I dove into my scrap bin to find a great grey speckled fabric to use for binding. It blends with the backing and doesn’t attract too much attention or add to much to the scrappy top. Having a lot of grey on hand is never a bad thing!

Backing

Hold on to your seats for this one. I didn’t research anything about polar fleece before using it for the backing of this quilt. I had it on hand and have been trying to sew my stash off lately, so I thought to myself: why not? I didn’t pre-wash or anything with fleece, so hopefully no one is out there reading and rolling their eyes with wisdom of sewing with polar fleece. I’ll let you know how it stands up with over time.

Quilting

At the stage of quilting, I was knee deep in designing and releasing my own pantographs. I had designed the Blender panto with versatility in mine. It looks like a swirl of snow picked up in the dead of winter in a field – so why not add it to the snowflake quilt? If you like this pantograph you can request your longarm quilter to grab it from my shop here, or you can request it when you submit your quilting request form. You can find that form on my long arm quilting information page to send your quilt in!
